Troubleshooting Chrome Automatically Opens a New TAB

Google Chrome is an excellent browser, but sometimes you may experience some issues while using it.
This issue, in particular, affects those users who accidentally open multiple tabs at once.
If you are facing this issue, this guide will show you a few troubleshooting tips to help you resolve it.

  • When Chrome automatically opens a new tab, it could be due to unwanted add-ons.
  • The browser also automatically opens a new tab when there are too many tabs open.

Disable Tab Reopen

  1. Open Chrome and click on Menu.

  2. Select Settings.
  3. Under the On startup section, select Open a specific page or set of pages.
  4. Click on Reopen tabs that were recently closed.
  5. Uncheck the checkbox for Enable tab reopen and click OK to save the changes.

  6. Disable Tab Preview
    Click on Menu.
  7. Select Settings.
  8. Under the On startup section, select Open a specific page or set of pages.
  9. Click on Show Advanced Settings.

  11. Click OK to save the changes.

Hide the New Tab button

  1. Open Chrome.

  2. Click More.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. Select Open a specific page or set of pages.

  6. Scroll down to Open a new page and in the drop-down menu, select New Tab.
  7. Click Done.

  9. Right-click the Chrome icon on the Windows taskbar.
  10. Select Properties.

  12. Select the Open a specific page or set of pages radio button.
  13. Then, select New Tab in the drop-down menu.

  14. Click Apply then click OK.
  15. You may need to restart your PC for the changes to take effect.

Disable Tab Grouping

  1. Open Chrome.

  2. Click the Settings icon on the browser’s toolbar.
  3. Select the Advanced option.
  4. Toggle the Open new windows in a tab instead of a new window option.
  5. Now you can close the tab and reopen it.
    Now you can close the tab and reopen it.
  6. Reset the Settings
    Click the Settings icon and select Advanced from the drop-down menu.
  7. Click Reset settings to remove all saved settings.
